Yes, it is true. Akito is indeed a girl. That fact is revealed in Chapter 97 & 98. They revealed that Akito is a girl in the anime. Only Kureno, Hatori, Ayame, and Shigure know.

i was chatting with my friend from japan about this yesterday...didnt you ever wonder why shigure is so nice to akito? shegure is in love with akito, but akito i a meany and is cheeting on shigure with the year of the hourse.the books are out in japanese first then english, my fiend told me what the said. AKITO IS A FEMALE. Akitos mother wanted to gain power in the sohama family so she raised akito as a boy. really people look at that face, that looks like a sexy female in drag to me.

I dont know why everyone hates Akito. It was pretty weird to find out he was really a girl. I havent read the manga, but a friend who has told me so. I was like  , especially because she was one of my favorite character and I was oh-so-fascinated by *him* ��. Anyway, she makes one hell of a bastard (like somebody said), but also one hell of a villain. She's just so evil  You people shouldn't wish she died... she's the perfect bad girl in the story!
