Stellvia of the Universe

In the year 2167, the Earth suffered major damage when it was swallowed in the waves of radiation and electromagnetism from a supernova explosion. People throughout the world worked together and overcame the crisis. Now the second wave from the supernova approaches earth, but it is ready for it. The Great Mission of stopping the second wave falls to the six foundations (space stations) of which the one closest to earth is Stellvia.
We follow a young girl named Katase Shima, who applies, and is accepted to go to the elite space school at the Stellvia foundation, where the top students will have a chance to take part in the Great Mission. Shima is a great proggramer, but a poor pilot, and she works towards her goal with her friend and roommate Alisa Glennorth.
The Great Mission may be anticipated, but will things go as smoothly as planned? And what will happen afterwards, when humanity no longer has such a uniting goal?
